A Newark pub, formerly known as the Britannia, is set to re-open with a new look following a dramatic £600K redevelopment and a new name – The Riverside.
Owners Punch Taverns have worked closely with Partners James Bull and Ross Tunaley of Distinctive Inns’, on a joint investment project to restore the site to its former glory and bring back a much missed venue to the local community and visitors to the area.
Partner, James, explains: “We have been working with Punch for the last 12 years, running and developing other pubs in their estate, and when the opportunity arose to work with them on our first venture as Distinctive Inns, we jumped at the chance.”
James continues: “It’s a beautiful venue overlooking the river with a garden and glass pergola, so we decided to change the name to The Riverside. There have been a number of structural changes to create a lovely open plan interior but we’re conscious that it’s an old building so have been careful to retain it’s true character with traditional beamed ceilings and quirky little nooks and crannies and open fires. It’s been decorated in a traditional style but with a contemporary twist, with comfortable leather seating and glass feature walls.”
The look new venue now has full access for the disabled and boasts a 50 seater bar area serving a range of cask ales, and a separate restaurant dining area that seats 60 but with a clear distinction between the two.
James adds: “We want the Riverside to appeal to everyone and it’s quite rare that pubs have an equal appeal for both drinkers and diners but that’s what we’ve tried to create here. We’re raring to go and look forward to welcoming our customers!”
The new gastro style restaurant menu comprises classic British dishes made from fresh, locally sourced ingredients, a deli board offering finger foods such as chorizo sausage and mozzarella and freshly made sandwiches served at lunch times.
Local villagers and other special guests have been invited to a VIP opening on 25th March with canapés and live entertainment allowing them to experience a sneak preview before the venue re-opens to the public on Monday 29th March.
Punch Taverns’ operations manager, Paul Taylor adds: “We’re delighted to be working with Distinctive Inns on the redevelopment of the Riverside. James and his team have some great plans to deliver a fantastic customer experience and they have our full support.”
